Mummy Makeovers

Having children can be one of the most important times in a woman’s life.  It is a time of joy, celebration and new beginnings, but it is certainly not without its costs and struggles.  One of the major problems that isn’t talked about enough in public, is the serious effects that pregnancy and child birth can have on a woman’s body.  This is where Mummy Makeovers come in.  Sydney is all about the beach and beach bodies, so a great way for a woman to overcome her post-pregnancy insecurity is with a Mummy Makeover, to help give her back the confidence that she had before having her child.

What Are They?

A Mummy makeover is a package of treatments designed specifically to address the issues that a woman might have with her body post-pregnancy.   It can be completed in one visit or in a series of appointments.  It aims to give women back their pre-pregnancy figure, so that they can regain their confidence, whether they are on Sydney’s beaches, at the gym or out work.  Mummy makeovers can help with, sagging, stretched or enlarged breasts, as well as stretch marks, loose skin and fat deposits that won’t go away through diet and exercise.

What Procedures are Included?

Mummy makeovers can include a range of treatments and each package can be tailored to the specific problems that a woman may have.  The most common procedures that can be included in a Mummy Makeover are:

  • Breast Lift
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Liposuction
  • Thigh Lift
  • Labiaplasty
  • Cellulite Treatment
  • Botox

As each woman is different, they can customise whichever procedures they want or feel are necessary for them.  Some might be happy with only two or three, while others may want their whole body restored.

Is a Mummy Makeover Right For Me?

Mummy Makeovers can help women with their self-esteem and confidence, but not everyone is an ideal candidate.  If you would like to have a Mummy Makeover, it is best that you:

  • Are at least six months since your last pregnancy and don’t plan on having any more children
  • Are at a stable weight – it is best to be near your ideal weight before the procedure, as this can help the surgeon determine how much skin needs to be removed
  • Are fit and healthy with good nutrition
  • Are a non-smoker or have quit smoking at least 12 months previously
  • Have good quality skin
  • Have realistic goals and are clear about what you want and expect from the makeover
  • Have a positive outlook
  • Have fat deposits that cannot be removed through diet and exercise
  • Have loose skin, saggy breasts or stretch marks
  • Would like your body tightened to boost your confidence

If you aren’t sure about any of this or would like some more advice, talk to your Sydney plastic surgeon to answer any questions you may have and get tips that are specific to your situation.

Costs

The cost of this procedure will vary depending on how many treatments you would like, your location and your doctor.  The costs are generally comprised of three parts:

  • Anaesthesia fees if your surgery requires a general anaesthetic
  • Hospital fees
  • Surgeon fees

The total costs can vary significantly, but expect the cheapest treatment packages to start at $20,000 and move up from there.  Even though it can be costly, a Mummy Makeover is generally much cheaper than getting the procedures individually.  Contact your Sydney based plastic surgeon to get a more accurate quote on a Mummy Makeover.

Blood tests and X-rays may or may not be included in the total fee.  Prescription medication may also be another cost that you need to consider.  It is possible for Medicare or your health fund to cover part of your Mummy Makeover.  Contact your surgeon, Medicare or your health fund to see if you can get a rebate.

Risks and Complications

One thing to consider is that Mummy Makeovers are a major surgery.  They can help you significantly with your self esteem, but it is not a procedure to consider lightly.  While risks and complications are very uncommon, it is important to weigh them up when considering the benefits of the surgery.  Talk to your surgeon to better understand the specific risks that you may face.

Preparing For Surgery

Before you get your Mummy Makeover, it is important that you are adequately prepared.  You need to be close to your goal weight, ideally exercising regularly and eating well.  It is also best to keep alcohol consumption down to just a few drinks each week and quit smoking at least six weeks prior, if not earlier.  You also may need to get blood tests or X-rays prior to the surgery.  A medical examination may also be required and you might need to take medication or adjust your current regime.

In consultations prior your treatments, photos may be taken, you will be measured for your garment and given the opportunity to ask any specific questions you may have.  Establish a plan for your recovery period, so that the tasks of daily life are taken care of without potentially compromising your health.

Recovery Period

Taking care of yourself during recovery is just as important as your surgery.  Depending on your procedures, you may just have day surgery or be kept in hospital.  The surgery itself can take between four and eight hours and the recovery period will vary according to which treatments you underwent.  You will be given information on post-operative care, including which medications to take for pain, to improve healing and reduce the risks of infection.  After your Mummy Makeover, it is important to listen to your doctor’s instructions, to rest and avoid strenuous activities.  If you experience any complications, seek medical attention.   After your surgery, you will have a series of post-operative appointments to continue your care.
